How Long Is Police Academy Training
Austin Police Department restarts ‘reimagined’ police academy | KVUE
Every police academy is structured a little bit differently but at the end of the day, most of the policies are very similar. The average police academy requires recruits go through 800 hours of training before they can graduate and be sworn in. While 800 hours may only round out to be about 5 months if operating on a 40 hour work week, a lot of academies actually require about 6-8 months of total training.

Different Types Of Police Academies
The type of academy a recruit attends has a great deal to do with how the day-to-day life of a recruit may be structured. In some states, police training is decentralized and conducted at local community colleges or academies.
These academies tend to reflect a more collegiate atmosphere. In others, there may be one police academy that provides law enforcement training for the entire state. Some police agencies may host their academy.
Law enforcement agencies that hold their academies tend to have the most rigid training because their recruits are also hired as employees. This allows the agency to exert more control over their recruits and impose stricter disciplinary standards.
These academies are usually run similar to a military-style boot camp, where push-ups, leg lifts, and other forms of physical exertion are used as means of correcting even minor infractions.

Police Academy : Their First Assignment
In 1985’s Police Academy 2: Their First Assignment, the newly graduated cadets are sent to one of the worst precincts in the city to improve the conditions. Lt. Mauser undermines their attempts so he can get Capt. Lassard fired and get the position in charge.
Plan On Being Wrong A Lot
Go in with the understanding that whatever you do is probably going to be wrong. Expect to be yelled at. Take it in stride and understand it for what it is: a way for the instructors to gain control and instill discipline quickly, efficiently, and effectively.
There’s no right answer if you’re asked why you did whatever it was that drew the instructor’s attention to you, so avoid the temptation to try to explain yourself. Any answers you give should be short and to the point.

Does The Police Academy Cost Anything
For many police recruits, attending the academy is not only free, but it will also earn them a salary. That’s because they have already been hired as police officers, and the academy, generally run by the hiring agency or the state in which they will be working, is considered part of the new job. These officers can expect to earn either their starting salary in full or a fraction of it, with the remainder kicking in upon graduation.
While many states, including Washington and Oregon, require recruits to be offered a jobbefore completing the academy, others allow aspiring officers to attend stand-alone academies, generally offered by community colleges and local tech schools. These programs do require students to pay tuition, which again will vary depending on the location and institution. The Basic Law Enforcement Training program at Wayne County Community College in North Carolina, for example, costs around $2,000 to attend. Some programs may also charge extra fees for things like the required background check, fingerprinting, application for state certification, physical evaluation and uniforms.
Whats Covered In Academy Training
Local agencies, such as the Commission on Peace Officers Standards and Training, dictate the level of training required to become a police officer in their region. Academy training includes a blend of classroom and practical training. Youll take classes in firearms, first aid, criminal law, emergency vehicle operations, defensive tactics, and investigations. At the same time, youll learn about department processes for procedures like arrests and reports.
Most programs will include specialized training, based on the location. For example, departments in large metro areas may train on counterterrorism, riot control, and bomb squad. In addition, other programs may focus on community policing, problem-solving, and patrolling.

Meet The Physical Fitness Requirements
If you’re not in shape now, you’re going to want to get there quicklyideally before your first day at the academy. The instructors will shout and yell, but they won’t ever hit you. You can expect to do plenty of pushups instead when a classmate screws upand rest assured that someone will.
When your arms get too tried to hold you in the front-leaning-rest position, turn on your back and do flutter kicks. These forms of physical exercise are a great way to instill both mental and physical discipline. They also teach you to push through pain and discomfort to accomplish a task, and this can help you survive a violent encounter when you get to the road.
Take this part seriously right from the beginning. You can’t graduate from the academy in some states without passing a physical fitness test. The test can include wall and fence climbing, sprinting, an obstacle course, and body drags.

Police Academy Training Is Worth Every Minute
Academy life is both strenuous and exhausting, but it’s also fun. In the academy, memories and friendships are made that will last well beyond your career.
Those who can tough it out emerge smarter and stronger for their efforts. The police academy prepares recruits to face the stresses and rigors of police work, and it’s the necessary first step toward a successful career in law enforcement.
Can I Work Nights Or Weekends During The Full
Yes, however, it is strongly discouraged. The recruit training program is designed to be a rigorous program with challenging physical and academic requirements. The physical demands involve not only fitness training but also skills training, such as defensive tactics, firearms, and emergency vehicle operation, all of which require a high degree of stamina and concentration. The recruit training program also requires a great deal of non-academy time for homework, study, and preparation for the next training day. Similarly, please note that the goal of the academy is to prepare you for performance on the street and your career as a police officer. Retention of the knowledge and skills obtained in the academy is critical to success on the street. Insufficient rest and inadequate time to study and prepare will severely and negatively impact retention and application. As a result, due to concerns about your attentiveness and safety during the training and due to our desire that you successfully complete the training and have success as an officer, we strongly discourage working during the academy training.

What Are The Police Academy Exams Like
During your weeks of training, youre preparing for a series of exams. In most academies, you take around 14 written exams, plus 4 practicals on firearms, defence tactics, driving, and first aid.
These tests are varied and challenging. If you fail them, you fail out of the academy. However, there are rules and tricks to help you prepare for these exams and successfully complete training.
How To Prepare For The Police Academy
The course syllabus is extensive. To get through it successfully, candidates must be prepared. Here are some ways you can navigate through the course with success.
First keep fit. Yes, you may have succeeded in the police officer exam, but your physical strength and endurance are now going to be tested much further. Go to the gym, build strength and cardiovascular capacity to maximize your endurance on the field. You should do strength-based exercises at least three-times weekly, and cardiovascular exercises daily. However, you may tweak this recommendation based on your own activity / inactivity levels.
Second, build teamwork skills. No police officer goes it alone. To succeed at both the police academy and in your future career as a police officer, you must be able to build and maintain personal relationships and this includes working effectively within teams. Sometimes this can be difficult, particularly if its not something you like or are used to. But it is something that you need to work on and its better to start now rather than trying to resolve it when things are too late.

Police Academy : Back In Training
Police Academy 3: Back in Training was released in 1986, and like its predecessor, was directed by Jerry Paris. When the governor of the state announces that budget cuts are in order to get rid of the worst of the two police academies, the metropolitan police academy, led by Commandant Lassard, work on ensuring it is not theirs. This is hindered by their unusual gang of new cadets.
Signing Up For The Police Academy Means Hard Days Ahead
Besides the academic requirements, recruits have to be proficient in several areas considered to be “high liabilities.” These subjects include firearms, defensive tactics, first aid, and vehicle operations. The high liability courses involve long and grueling days.
Recruits may spend hot summer days outside on the firearms range, or they may sweat it out on the mats in defensive tactics. Due to the intensity of the training, injuries are common.

Police Officer Hiring Process
Inside the Sacramento Police Academy | The Recruits
The police officer hiring process is much different than that of any other job. It is not simply attending an interview and then being approved for the position. In order to become a police officer, you need to undergo a series of tests and each of them can disqualify you. The entire process is quite competitive and each police department can put more importance on a single element of the process rather than on the other. Nevertheless, the hiring process consists of several elements that are common for each agency no matter if we talk about local, state or federal law enforcement.
Once your application is accepted, you need to be tested in order to prove that you have what it takes to do the job. This includes checking both your general knowledge, writing skills, physical abilities, and your background. Here are the steps that you need to successfully pass through, in order to become a police officer:
- Physical ability test
The physical ability test checks the fitness of the candidate and their readiness to face the physical challenges of the police officer job. Basically, there are two approaches adopted by the agencies into performing the PAT: the job simulation method and the fitness-based method. In both cases, it is a pass/fail test and the applicant must meet certain criteria in order to pass. Check with the department which of the two approaches they use and train for the test.
- Medical exam
- Background check
- Polygraph test
- Psychological screening
- Oral board interview

Starting At The Bottom As A Police Recruit
Law enforcement agencies have rank structures that are very similar to the military. Typically, a police department’s chain of command will start with the rank of officer or deputy, or in the case of state agencies, trooper. The ranks will include sergeants, lieutenants, captains, and majors. At the bottom of the ladder is the police academy recruit.

Police Academies Are Learning Institutions
Above all else, police academies are places of learning. Each state has different requirements dealing with the mandated curriculum and training hours a recruit has to have before getting law enforcement or POST certification. Typically, academy recruits will spend upwards of 800 hours or more in training before they graduate. Most of this instruction takes place in a classroom.
Academics are very important in police academy training. Recruits usually take at least one test a week while they are in the academy, and there are strict rules in place about getting a passing score.
In Florida, for example, recruits must receive an 80% or higher on each test while they are in the academy. If they fail to achieve 80% on any test, they have to leave the academy. Developing effective study habits is essential for academy success.
What Law Enforcement Looks For In New Recruits
Law enforcement agencies look for a few key traits in new recruits. The first is that you meet the standards for your age. You must be a U.S. citizen who is at least 21 years old when you graduate from the police academy to start your career. You are also required to have a valid drivers license and you must pass a background check. If you have been convicted of a crime, then you will not be accepted into the police academy.
The police agencies also require that you pass a psychological evaluation and that you have the legal ability to obtain a firearm. If you are not qualified to purchase a firearm, then you will not qualify for the law enforcement agency. The final consideration is the physical standards set by the police force. You must be able to pass the fitness test to qualify for your role as a police officer.
